8th GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES SYLLABUS
Teacher
Miss Thompson
U.S. History
Welcome to eighth grade U.S. History. The eighth grade course is a study of the 13 Original Colonies through the Civil War. Students will study the causes of past events, and their effects on shaping the present and future.
Expectations of Students
The students will be expected to come to class with a good attitude. A student’s best efforts will be expected at all times. Each student will be responsible for his/her assignments, deadlines, materials, and behavior.
Materials Needed
The student will need to bring to class EVERYDAY:
Textbook (United States History, Beginnings to 1877)
3 ring binder to keep assignments organized
Spiral Notebook for note-taking
Paper
Pen or pencil
Classroom Rules
1. Be on time and prepared
2. Stay in your seat
3. Work quietly
4. Respect others
5. Follow directions the first time they are given
Since all 8th grade classes are close in proximity, tardies will be strictly enforced.
Consequences for Breaking the Rules
Consequences will be decided at the discretion of the teacher and administrator based on the nature of the circumstances. Consequences may include but are not limited to after school detention, parent/teacher conference, or referral to the office.
Restroom Breaks
Try to go to the restroom during your passing period. But if you do need to use the restroom, you must have permission from Miss Thompson. Only one person at a time may leave the room.
Grading
I believe your grade should truly reflect your knowledge of the class material. Daily Assignments, Group participation, Quizzes, Projects, Computer Assignments, Notes, and Tests will make up your grade. Tests make up a large percentage of your grade. A study guide will be provided for each test and it is strongly recommended that you complete it.
Breakdown of your grade:
50% of your grade will be tests
30% of your grade will be quizzes/projects
20% of your grade will be daily work
Grading Scale:
A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 60-69%
F = 0-59%
Late Work
Absent work will only be excused for twice the number of days absent.
Late work may be turned in; however, a student will receive 50% of the original grade.
Redos
Any test may be redone at the individual teacher’s discretion. Students who score less than 70% on a test will be required to redo the exam.
